Observations and Assessments

In Reception we use Tapestry, an online Learning Journal to record photos, observations and make comments, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. We use this system to build up a record of your child’s experiences during their time in Reception. This system helps us to engage with parents and carers to share information and record the children’s play and learning in and outside of the classroom.

Assessments of the child’s development are then made reflecting on observations. All assessments help staff to plan for “next steps” of the child’s learning and experiences. Observations are carried out by all staff and may be of a specific child, a group focus or a class observation. We also encourage parent contributions too, Tapestry becomes a great communication tool tracking your child’s progress at home and in school. Please see the guidence below .....

At the beginning of the year the children will take part in the reception baseline assessment. This provides school with an on-entry assessment of pupil attainment to be used as a starting point from which a cohort-level progress measure to the end of key stage 2 (KS2) can be created.

Regular parent evenings and target setting on Tapestry help staff to track progress, support development and engage parent support throughout the year.

The EYFS Profile is used as a summative assessment at the end of the reception year. It summarises and makes statements about the child’s progress towards the revised Early Learning Goals.
